Goals of Certificate Program
Through NHIA, home infusion providers have come together to express the need to meet this educational challenge by developing a national certificate program for home infusion pharmacists. In addition to providing an opportunity for pharmacists to be recognized with a certificate of completion in home infusion therapy (HIT), this initiative will create education and training materials that may be used by pharmacists practicing in all home infusion settings-independent, hospital-based, and national organizations-as a guideline for staff training and competency testing. Because of the lack of comparable educational programs in academic or other sectors it is envisioned that this certificate program will become the primary training vehicle for all pharmacists entering into home infusion practice.
Who will benefit?
Beneficiaries of the NHIA Home Infusion Pharmacy Certificate Program include home infusion organizations seeking a training venue and competency validation for both new and existing staff; community and hospital pharmacists seeking to change their field of practice; individual practicing home infusion pharmacists seeking to validate and update their skills and competency; and faculty and students at colleges of pharmacy.
Background
Home infusion therapy (HIT) has been a recognized sector of pharmacy practice for nearly 20 years and the HIT market currently produces revenues of $4-5 billion a year. But despite its established role in the United States health care system, to date there have been few commercially available education and training opportunities for home infusion pharmacists.
For HIT providers of all types-national, hospital-based (or affiliated), and independent, local, and regional providers-the challenge of finding qualified staff is reaching crisis proportions. Training is often provided on-the-job with few, if any, formal educational programs provided outside of corporate settings. To practice in the "real world" of home infusion pharmacy, pharmacists must be qualified to manage a myriad of clinical, financial, operational, and regulatory issues unique to this practice setting. A holistic educational approach is required to train pharmacists to successfully manage these diverse demands.
NIPCO Advantage
NHIA has also worked closely with The National Institute for Pharmacist Care Outcomes (NIPCO) to develop the program. NIPCO, launched by NCPA in 1995, is the national accrediting organization for pharmacist care education and training programs leading to the Pharmacist Care Diplomate credential and a leading authority in helping community pharmacists develop new market niches in disease management. To date, more than 13,000 pharmacists have successfully completed NIPCO programs.
Advisory Board
NHIA has established an eminent advisory board, led by the project's Editor-in-Chief, Mary R. Monk-Tutor, Ph.D., R.Ph., FASHP. Mary Monk-Tutor, is Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Administration at McWhorter School of Pharmacy, Samford University, in Birmingham, Alabama and has many years experience in developing educational curricula in the home infusion pharmacy arena. The advisory board is comprised of leaders in the home infusion pharmacy community, chosen both for their expertise as well as their ability to represent the diverse needs of the infusion pharmacy community.
